The selection comprises the following stages:
- Computer Based Test (CBT): Single-stage objective type computer-based examination covering General Awareness, Arithmetic, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and subject-specific technical knowledge. Duration is 90 minutes with 100 questions carrying 100 marks.
- Shortlisting for Document Verification: Candidates are shortlisted based on CBT merit, normalized marks (if exam held in multiple shifts), and category-wise cutoff. Number shortlisted is typically 2-3 times the number of vacancies.
- Document Verification (DV): Original certificates and documents are verified including educational qualifications, caste certificate, age proof, registration certificates (for Nurse/Pharmacist), medical fitness certificate, and character certificate.
- Medical Examination: Candidates who clear DV undergo comprehensive medical examination as per Railway Board standards to assess physical and mental fitness for railway service.
- Final Merit List: Based on CBT marks, subject to qualifying DV and medical fitness. Vacancies are filled strictly in order of merit within each category and post.
- Appointment: Selected candidates receive appointment letters and are required to join within stipulated time at designated railway zones/divisions.
