CISF and BSF Recruitment 2026 — What is Different This Year

Two of India's largest paramilitary forces — Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Border Security Force (BSF) — have notified large recruitment cycles for 2026. Combined vacancies cross 35,000 across constable, head constable, and sub-inspector ranks.

Let me cover what is different this year and how aspirants should approach.

CISF 2026 recruitment

CISF protects critical infrastructure — airports, nuclear facilities, important government buildings, metro systems, ports, and atomic plants. The force has roughly 1.8 lakh personnel currently and is expanding to 2.1 lakh by 2027.

Vacancies announced for 2026 cycle:

  • Constable (General Duty) — 11,025 posts
  • Head Constable (Ministerial) — 1,178 posts
  • Assistant Sub-Inspector (Stenographer) — 248 posts
  • Assistant Sub-Inspector (Executive) — 1,500 posts (notification later)
  • Sub-Inspector (Executive) — 2,500 posts via SSC CPO

Total CISF intake for 2026 — approximately 16,400 posts.

What is new in CISF 2026

Change 1 — Eligibility for women candidates has been relaxed for Constable GD posts. Earlier 33 percent reservation was the cap; now it can go up to 40 percent in airport and metro security postings where women constables are increasingly preferred for passenger screening.

Change 2 — Educational qualification for Constable GD now allows 10+2 candidates with relevant computer literacy, in addition to traditional 10th pass candidates. This makes the role more attractive to a wider pool.

Change 3 — Physical Standards Test (PST) now follows the simplified 2025 framework. Height requirement for general category males is 170 cm (unchanged), but chest measurement has been reduced from 80-85 cm to 78-83 cm for general males. Similar relaxations for other categories.

Change 4 — The Document Verification stage has been integrated with Detailed Medical Examination (DME) to reduce candidate travel. Both happen at the same training centre over 3 days.

Salary for CISF Constable in 2026

Starting basic — Rs 21,700 Total in-hand approximately Rs 32,000 to 38,000 per month depending on posting station.

Allowances include:

  • Risk allowance for high-risk postings (nuclear, atomic)
  • Hard area allowance for remote postings
  • Ration money allowance
  • Uniform allowance
  • Free medical for self and family

Annual increment plus DA revisions add roughly Rs 1,000 to 1,500 per month every year.

After 5 to 7 years, internal promotion to Head Constable adds another Rs 5,000 to 7,000 per month basic.

BSF 2026 recruitment

BSF guards India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. Total strength is approximately 2.65 lakh personnel. The 2026 expansion takes it to 2.85 lakh.

Vacancies for 2026:

  • Constable (GD) — 9,820 posts
  • Constable (Tradesman) — 4,500 posts (cooks, drivers, mechanics, technicians)
  • Head Constable (Communication) — 800 posts
  • Head Constable (Ministerial) — 412 posts
  • Sub-Inspector (Communication and Engineering) — 320 posts
  • Assistant Commandant (Engineers, Veterinary, Doctors) — direct recruitment via UPSC CAPF

Total BSF intake — approximately 16,000 posts.

What is new in BSF 2026

Change 1 — BSF Constable Tradesman posts have been significantly expanded. Cooks, drivers, masons, carpenters, electricians, and barbers are all in demand for forward operating bases.

Change 2 — Tribal candidates from northeast states get specific reservation expansion for postings in northeast region (Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya borders). This addresses local recruitment for local terrain familiarity.

Change 3 — Female constable recruitment is being expanded. Some sectors of border guarding (frisking at outposts, women's wing operations) are increasing female personnel.

Change 4 — Physical Endurance Test (PET) standards for general male candidates — 5 km run in 24 minutes (unchanged), but the long jump and high jump have been replaced with broader physical fitness assessment using a multi-event scoring system. Easier on candidates who are not strong in jumps specifically.

Change 5 — Medical examination now includes mental health screening as a mandatory component, in line with recommendations from 2025 reform task force on paramilitary welfare. Candidates with declared anxiety or depression history must provide treating doctor's clearance.

BSF Constable salary

Starting basic — Rs 21,700 (same as CISF) In-hand monthly — Rs 28,000 to 36,000 depending on posting

Border duty allowance is significant. Border posting carries Rs 5,000 to 8,000 extra per month. Hardship area allowance adds another Rs 2,000 to 4,000.

Free ration for self and family, free uniform, full medical care.

Selection process — same broad structure for both

Stage 1 — Physical Standards Test (height, weight, chest) Stage 2 — Physical Endurance Test (running, long jump, high jump) Stage 3 — Written Examination (Computer Based Test) Stage 4 — Document Verification Stage 5 — Medical Examination

For some posts, there may be Trade Test (for Tradesman category) or Skill Test (for Stenographer).

Written exam syllabus

The CBT for Constable GD and Tradesman posts has:

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning — 25 questions
  • General Knowledge and General Awareness — 25 questions
  • Elementary Mathematics — 25 questions
  • English/Hindi (depending on candidate's preference) — 25 questions

Total 100 questions, 100 marks, 90 minutes. Negative marking 0.50 per wrong answer.

Cutoff for general category usually around 50 to 60 marks. Reserved categories slightly lower.

Preparation strategy

This is a physical-heavy selection. Most candidates fail at PET stage, not at written exam.

Start physical training 4 to 6 months before exam:

  • Daily 5 km run with progressive timing
  • Strength work — push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups
  • Long jump and high jump practice 3 times a week
  • Stretching and flexibility daily

For written exam, Lucent GK, R.S. Aggarwal Reasoning and Math foundation level, and one current affairs PDF for last 6 months is enough.

Coaching for CISF/BSF written exam is rarely necessary. Self-study with cheap books works fine. The physical training is harder to self-design — consider joining a sports academy or fitness centre for proper coaching.

Posting and lifestyle

CISF postings are urban — airports, metro stations, important buildings, ports. Family can usually live with you in subsidised quarters. Work is mostly 8-hour shifts on rotation.

BSF postings are remote and tough — border outposts in Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura. Family quarters are at division headquarters, not at the actual border post. You will live at the post for 2 to 3 months at a time and visit family on rotation leave.

For someone seeking a stable but flexible lifestyle, CISF is more comfortable. For someone wanting actual border service experience with hardship pay, BSF is the call.

Career growth in CAPF

Both CISF and BSF have steady internal promotion tracks:

  • Constable to Head Constable — 7 to 10 years
  • Head Constable to Assistant Sub-Inspector — additional 8 to 10 years
  • Assistant Sub-Inspector to Sub-Inspector — additional 5 to 7 years
  • Sub-Inspector to Inspector — additional 5 to 7 years
  • Inspector to Assistant Commandant — limited promotion, mostly for outstanding performers

Or candidates can write LDCE (Limited Departmental Competitive Examination) to skip ranks. Many ambitious constables clear LDCE within 8 years and become officers directly.

Final advice

Paramilitary service is honourable but physically demanding. Be honest about whether you can handle border posting in 50 degree heat in Rajasthan, or freezing cold in Kashmir, or humid jungle of northeast.

If you cannot handle hardship, CISF is fine. If you crave the actual frontline experience, BSF.

Both pay similar salaries. Both have stable career tracks. Both give pension and medical for life.

Apply for both. The notifications are roughly 3 to 4 months apart so you can prepare once and give multiple exams.

Lakhs of Indians want these uniforms. The selection is competitive. Train hard, prepare well, show up calm.

Jai Hind.
